Ever Forward: A Social Justice Blueprint for Theatre Educators

Led by Region 5 National Playwriting Programs Chair, Sean Byrd – this session is inspired by A 2016 series in American Theatre Magazine entitled, What Can Theatre Do? A Post-Election Colloquy. The series of articles explored how theatre artists might use their skills and craft as tools for social justice reform in the contemporary United States. Over a period during the last 3 years, a working group of Region 5 Theatre Faculty took this article and its prompts as a starting point to create Ever Forward: A Social Justice Blueprint for Theatre Educators. In this blueprint, we asked ourselves how college theatre faculty might utilize concrete, timely, specific tools to impact change, make sure decision-makers represent the world outside our campus, and engage our students and communities. We would like to share this 'Wonder Woman' document (join us to find out exactly what that means) with the faculty and students in Region 7 who might employ it, refine it, define it and use it, both in production, in the classroom and in the creation of new work.
